Debbie Coons is counting on growing her hair-cutting shop in Chadds Ford. Cutters Square opened in the Plaza at Chadds Ford in April.

Debbie Coons has been cutting hair for more than 30 years. She’s worked as a full-service stylist—hair coloring and perming—during that time. Now, though, Coons has her own shop in Chadds Ford Township, where it’s strictly hair-cutting only.

The shop is Cutters Square at 1410 Baltimore Pike, in the little strip mall on Route 1 between Heyburn Road and the Chadds Ford Tavern. Customers can just walk in; no appointment is necessary. And the price is competitive at $12 per haircut.

After 36 years in the business, Coons wanted her own shop, and she settled on Chadds Ford. It was all about location.

“I needed a place that was highly visible and had good parking,” she said.

Coons said Cutters Square is not a barber shop but a hair cutting shop. The difference, she said, is that in haircut shops, a straight razor can only be used on the hair. A straight razor can be used on the face in a barber shop. She said the difference in the cut's quality is virtually negligible.

“They have clippers now that get as close as a straight razor, but you can’t use the straight razor [in a hair-cutting shop],” she explained.

Right now, Coons is operating solo but hopes that will change soon as business picks up to the point where she needs to hire more cutters. She’s been open since April and is averaging 20-25 haircuts per week. She’d like to be doing at least that many per day. Coons said she and four others were giving 30-35 cuts per day where she used to work in Springfield.

“I’d like to get to that here, eventually,” Coons said. “Once we get busier, I’ll bring more operators in.”

She said the specialty is simple, good haircuts for men, women, and children, for a good price. She has one simple goal for the future: “Keep the concept what it is, quality haircuts at an affordable price with no waiting and with no appointment needed.”

Cutters Square is open six days a week, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information about Cutters Square, phone Coons at 484-840-8707.
