Voters in the 10th Legislative District have a clear choice between the candidates for State Representative, Position 1. The incumbent, Republican Greg Gilday, has opposed important legislation which would improve women’s access to contraception, prescriptions for common infections and post-partum conditions, care for life-threatening pregnancy complications, and, yes, abortion, particularly in rural areas of the state.

Our current representative voted no on a bill allowing midwives to provide contraceptives and prescriptions for STIs and certain postpartum conditions, voted no on a bill allowing advanced practice clinicians like nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants to provide abortion care in Washington, and voted not on a bill which would prevent hospital policies from restricting qualified medical providers from providing essential miscarriage treatment and care for patients whose lives are at risk due to pregnancy complications. This bill, which was passed, includes hospitals affiliated with religious institutions, which often restricted care for patients with spontaneous miscarriages and life-threatening pregnancy complications. This bill did not affect hospital’s policies with respect to elective abortions.

And our current representative voted no on a bill requiring student health plans for full-time college students to cover abortion, subject to the same requirements applicable to other health plans.

We deserve better than this! Clyde Shavers, the Democratic candidate for Representative, Position 1, supports women’s reproductive freedom and access to health care. Clyde would have voted yes on every one of these bills. Vote for Clyde Shavers, and vote for women’s reproductive health care rights.
