10th LD, Pos. 1: Shavers will protect women’s health care | HeraldNet.com

I am a registered nurse, working years at Providence Hospital in Everett in labor and delivery. There is one fact about women’s health care that has been omitted from this debate over our future: the USA has the worst maternal mortality of the top 11 income producing nations world wide. U.S. maternal mortality rivals those of some third world nations without the economic and medical infrastructure the USA enjoys today.

Roe v. Wade was part of a package of protections for women in their reproductive years, that along with access to birth control and confidential counsel from an obstetrical provider contributed to lessening the grim statistics. Local state governments have a major role in protecting the rights of their citizens and are integral in reflecting the consensus of their voters.

We have a very important election this November. If you live in the 10th Legislative District, your elected State House Representative Greg Gilday voted no on March 7 on a bill to codify abortion protection rights into state law.

We in the 10th LD have an opportunity to elect a representative who understands and will protect a woman’s right to choose her own course, and on her own terms. Clyde Shavers is a consummate example of dedication to service in the community through his volunteer work and a vocal advocate for women’s health care and community healthcare as well. I urge you to cast your vote for Clyde Shavers in this November general election and protect health care in our community!
