AC/DC made its initial appearance in 1973 and later gave a new direction to the rock scene with its 1979 ‘Highway to Hell’ album, reflecting rock and roll and hard rock sounds. The band announced its name to the entire world, especially with the title track, and started reaching a wider global audience. In 1980, ‘Back in Black’ brought them another commercial success becoming one of the best-selling albums in music history.
The band’s triumphant rise in the rock scene continued in the early ’90s. The twelfth studio album ‘The Razors Edge‘ became another AC/DC record that left its mark in rock history. Tracks like ‘Thunderstruck’ and ‘Are You Ready’ became hits on the United States charts.
As the band’s fame increased, their songs were covered by many musicians and used in various movies. ‘Thunderstruck’ was one of them, and it was mainly featured in the films like ‘Dead Pool 2’ and ‘Battleship.’ Besides movies, this piece is also known for being used during a cyber attack in Iran.
Iran’s nuclear program was a great matter of controversy which encouraged a devastating cyber attack between 2009 and 2010. According to the reports, the American and Israeli governments developed a virus called Stuxnet. The virus took control of nuclear installations around the country and caused many machines to break down. However, the attackers were not satisfied with this, and they also used the facilities’ workstations to play ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC.
It was reported that a scientist from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran mentioned this issue in an email. He stated that the attackers accessed their VPN and shut down their system. He also pointed out that a piece of random music started playing increasingly loud in the workstations in the middle of the night. The scientist indicated that the song was AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck.’
The scientist wrote the following in his email:
“According to the email our cyber experts sent to our teams, they believe a hacker tool, Metasploit, was used. The hackers had access to our VPN. The automation network and Siemens hardware were attacked and shut down. I only know very little about these cyber issues as I am a scientist, not a computer expert.
There was also some music playing randomly on several of the workstations during the middle of the night, with the volume maxed out. I believe it was playing ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC.”
